Industry News: Ingram Changes Credit Card Policy
Ingram recently sent out a service alert to bookstores regarding a change to their credit card policy. Effective after March 2, 2026, Ingram could apply a surcharge to payments made with credit cards that have a billing address located in the United States or Canada. Whether the surcharge applies will depend on state laws. Ingram will also no longer accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover debit cards. The service alert also mentioned that Ingram will be unveiling a new “self service” payment system, with more details to come later.
Stores on terms with Ingram can pay via automated clearing house, or ACH, which is an electronic banking network for processing debit transactions. Generally, ACH transfers, much like using a debit card, are free for transactions such as bill payments, direct deposits, and bank-to-bank transfers. If using a third party to set up ACH (for example, if you set up ACH inside of QuickBooks to pay bills), banks do sometimes charge extra fees; however, ACH is typically a free service. Ingram has also mentioned that wire transfers could be an option, however, banks charge higher fees for wire transfers, typically $25-50 per transfer.
For more information on ACH transfers and whether your bank charges for them, see this article. It’s also important to speak with your bank and your accountant about any changes to your business finances.
SIBA is watching this situation, as it has been brought to our attention that this policy change could adversely affect some stores. Has your store been affected by Ingram’s decision? SIBA would love to hear from you. Please contact Candice Huber with any concerns.
