The Southern Book Prize: What Readers Are Saying About Their Local Bookstores
Nearly 500 ballots have already been cast so far for the Southern Book Prize, and while it is far too early to make any predictions about winners, one thing is abundantly clear: readers adore their indie bookstores. Below are just a few of the many glowing and enthusiastic comments from people who voted when they were asked to say something about their local bookstore:
Square Books (Oxford, MS) reminds me of why I love to read. It takes me to another place.
Fables & Ferns Bookstore (Dunwoody, GA) attends pop-ups all over the community to help bring books wherever you are.
I do not live in the US, but last summer I was fortunate enough to visit Parnassus Books (Nashville, TN). I bought several signed copies, which was incredible, and I picked up fantastic staff recommendations. My suitcase was heavy traveling back to Prague, but my heart was light-I knew I had reading for the next chapter of my life abroad.
Thank You Books (Birmingham, AL) is where I go for poetry church! The readings and book clubs and the staff are always so life-affirming!
I love exploring all of the nooks and curated areas of Octavia Books (New Orleans, LA), their events are terrific, and the staff there are so friendly and knowledgeable.
Pearl's Books (Fayetteville, AR) is everything the filmmakers of You've Got Mail had in mind when they created The Bookshop Around the Corner: friendly, informative staff, dogs welcome, kids adored, a writers' group, readings, and the interior is a delicious dark green color. It's just perfect. <3
I love Quail Ridge Books (Raleigh, NC)! From humble beginnings at their Glen Eden store, that’s where I fostered my love for reading as a child, getting lost in the bookshelves.
Every time a person votes for the Southern Book Prize, they are asked about their local bookstore. Bookstores can get their own customers involved by sharing the Southern Book Prize Ballot link:
