NVNR Education Spotlight: Community

Posted By: Nicki Leone NVNR,

Service to its "community" is at the center of the independent bookstore ethos. The relationship of the store with its community is why bookstores are often seen not just as "shops" but as cultural institutions. And it is what makes independent bookstores so important and so beloved by their patrons and customers.

The NVNR Community track focuses on helping stores to build on their community relationships:

Bookstore Crawls: How to for Newbies
If your larger community is home to multiple bookstores, a bookstore crawl is the perfect way to bring readers and booksellers together. We'll explain how to coordinate between stores, get community support, and strengthen the bottom line for all stores involved.

Book Festivals for Newbies
Book festivals are a dream for many. Booksellers who have done the legwork will share their lessons learned and lesson plan for launching, managing, and loving your community book festival.

The Future is Hyper-Local
Booksellers are often the center of knowledge for what is needed and what ails their community. This session will empower you to respond with strength to affect change, build supportive relationships, and make an impact locally, where it matters most.

Making Spaces Safer
Staff and customers need to feel safe in our stores and at our events. This session's leaders will focus on preventing harassment in public and social spaces.
