Meet the SIBA Board: Julia Davis, The Book Worm
Tell us about your store and your role at the store.
The Book Worm Bookstore is an award-winning independent bookstore and community gathering space in Powder Springs, Georgia. More than a place to buy books, we create meaningful literary experiences through author events, book festivals, reading programs, and community partnerships.
As owner, I guide the store's vision and oversee programming, partnerships, and daily operations. Together with our small but dedicated team, we create spaces where books and community connect.
What is your favorite part of your job and why?
My favorite part is seeing the impact of an inclusive space. When customers tell me they feel safe, seen, and welcomed; that they've learned something new about another culture - I know we're fulfilling our mission.
What do you see as the most important challenges facing booksellers today?
One of the greatest challenges is balancing convenience with community. Large retailers compete on price, speed, and scale. Independent bookstores offer something different: connection, representation, and a sense of belonging.
As costs continue to rise, it becomes harder to keep these community-centered spaces thriving. For Black-owned bookstores, the challenge is even greater. We are often expected to deliver the same level of convenience without the same resources.
What inspired your decision to be on the SIBA Board?
I joined the SIBA Board because I wanted to see more diversity throughout the organization. Rather than waiting for change, I decided to be part of it. Serving on the board gave me an opportunity to bring a different perspective and help create a space where more booksellers feel welcomed, represented, and heard.
What are you most excited about working on as a SIBA Board member?
I’m most excited about keeping SIBA connected to its booksellers. I want to see more voices included in the work and a stronger focus on what booksellers actually need day to day. When people feel seen and heard, the organization gets stronger.
Will you be at NVNR and what are your goals there?
Yes, NVNR is my favorite conference to attend. I love learning, connecting with fellow booksellers, and bringing back new ideas to the store. As a bookseller, my goal is to stay inspired and continue growing what The Book Worm offers our community. As a Board member, my focus is to listen closely. To understand how SIBA can better support booksellers and do even better in its work.
