2026 Banned Books Week Toolkit Now Available

Banned Books Week is October 4-10, 2026.

Now updated for 2026, SIBA's Banned Books Week Toolkit is designed to be useful to SIBA booksellers not only for their Banned Books Week plans, but also for responding to book challenges in their communities.

Included in the kit:

• SIBA-Created Marketing Materials and Templates
• Using "Decide for Yourself": SIBA's ongoing project highlighting SIBA bookseller reviews of challenged or banned books.
• Links to important resources from the American Library Association, ABA, ABFE, and SIBA’s Peer Bookseller Resource Library
• Canva templates for customizable flyers and social media graphics
• Downloadable "Decide for Yourself" bookmarks and shelf talkers

This year SIBA has also added a series of resources created by the Right to Read Working Group, including:

• Messaging and de-escalation language strategies to use with customers or in community meetings
• Leadership guidance for people running for school boards or other public offices
• Tracking information on Book Banning legislation
• Instructions on requesting information via the Freedom of Information Act

Book Banning is only part of a larger trend towards suppressing and silencing free and dissenting speech. The Right to Read Working Group materials provide tools for booksellers who are under increasing pressure and threat in their own states and communities.
