November/December 2010

Dearest booksellers,

We know you are madly busy, so this is a short (but important!) end-of-year newsletter from SIBA. Take a few moments to read through; we've included links to materials to help you sell more books from the Holiday Catalog (and more books in general). We're also looking for nominations for both the 2011 SIBA Book Awards and the next crop of Okra Picks, AND we have added features to the popular Free Book Stimulus Plan program, including a "Caught U Reading" card you can hand out to people you see reading books in public places.

And finally, it is the end of the year, which means your SIBA membership needs to be renewed. Once again, SIBA is offering its "Circle of Sites" banner-for-dues program, with some added options for banner sizes and formats.

Happy Holiday Bookselling!

 Holiday Catalog Toolkit

OliviaAt this point your SIBA holiday catalogs are being delivered to your customers in their Sunday papers, sitting in stacks around your shop, and stuffed into bags at your counter.  You’ve placed your orders and set up your displays.

To help you make the most of your holiday catalog sales, SIBA has downloadable materials and signage for your store and your website, including an online version of the catalog, spreadsheet titles lists, shelf talkers featuring the irrepressible Olivia and Dewey, “shop local” bookmarks, flyers and bag stuffers.

All available for booksellers at our catalog link: http://www.sibaweb.com/catalog

FBSP/Caught U Reading!

Help your customers get more bang for their buck this holiday season by promoting Free Book Stimulus Plan in your store.  Wanda Jewell’s popular “give back” program for bookstores is still going strong:  Any customer who sends her their receipt from shopping at your store will get a free book from her.  You get the sale, your customer gets a free gift, and Wanda gets to clean out her bookshelves. Everyone wins.
Send your customers to http://www.freebookstimulusplan.com for more information.

Hand out the flyer at your counter or stuff it in your bags:
http://www.authorsroundthesouth.com/docs/fbsp.pdf

Check out the FBSP Toolkit online, with all the usual posters, shelf talkers, website buttons, and whatnot to use in your shop.

Caught U Reading!

“Caught U Reading! You deserve a free book!”

One of the best ideas we heard at #SIBA10  this year came from Bound to Be Read Books, who have come up with a “Caught U Reading” campaign to hand out coupons to people they see reading books in public places. So we stole the idea (with their permission, we promise!)
As part of SIBA FBSP project, we’ve created bookmarks that fit in your average wallet that stores can download and add their own logo and store information to. On the reverse side of each bookmark are directions for the recipient to fill out their information and staple a store receipt to the bookmark, and send it in to FBSP.

Store staff can carry these around and hand them out to anyone they see reading in public.

Click here for the downloadable bookmarks that you can customize with your own store logo. In Eight different designs!:

SIBA Book Award nominations are open

What was the best southern book you read this year?  Nominations are now open for the 2011 SIBA Book Award:
http://www.sibaweb.com/siba-book-award/nomination-form

Books must be set in the South, by a Southern author, or both. They must have been published in 2010 (no reprints, please) and nominations must be submitted by Valentine’s Day, 2011.

Who can nominate? Well for the first round, anyone who works for or shops at southern indie bookstores. SIBA is now including links to the nominations form in the weekly bestseller list and monthly Lady Banks’ Commonplace Book newsletter—both of which reach directly to your customers.

You can encourage your customers to nominate their favorite southern books, but they will have to tell us what bookstore they shop at.  Non-SIBA store nominations won’t be eligible. So send your customers, and your staff, to the link above to nominate their 2010 favorites in the following categories:

  1. Cooking
  2. Childrens
  3. Fiction
  4. Nonfiction
  5. Poetry
  6. Young Adult

You can see the list of nominations here (this list is periodically vetted for eligibility)
http://www.sibaweb.com/siba-book-award/nominations

 Okra Pick Nominations are open!

Okra PicksOkay, now that you’ve told SIBA about your favorite books of the past year, what are the books you are most looking forward to this Spring? Nominations are now open for the Winter/Spring Okra Picks. These are forthcoming Southern books with release dates between Jan – April.

Nominate here:
http://www.sibaweb.com/okra/okra-pick

You must be with a SIBA-member Bookstore to nominate.

Time to Renew Your SIBA Membership
Banners-for-Dues program returns with more options

So you’ll notice the key words in the last two articles were “must be a member of SIBA.” Nominations for the SIBA Book Award, and nominations for the Okra Picks, are only eligible if they are made by or on behalf of SIBA Member stores.  And with 2010 winding down and the holiday season upon us, that means it’s time to renew your membership dues for next year.

You can do that here:

Or, you’ll be happy to hear that SIBA is once again offering its Circle of Sites Banner-for Dues program.  If you allow SIBA to run a banner on your website, we will waive your membership dues for 2011. Banners change weekly, with no other work or requirement from you. Your membership is sponsored by advertising publishers.
What’s new for Circle of Sites in 2011?

  1. We now offer the option of a horizontal or vertical banner. We heard from many stores that the horizontal banners didn’t always fit into their website design gracefully. For those of you with narrow two- or three-column sites, we now have a vertical option we can provide.
  2. In order to be eligible for free membership dues, the banner must appear “above the fold” –that is, visible to viewers when they first open your store site.

Stores interested in participating in the 2011 Circle of Sites program should contact Nicki at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Georgia, Unchained

Why is it when people go a rambling, they need to do it in a big blue bus?
The Moth radio show’s “Unchained Tour of Georgie” kicked off last week. A busload of storytellers, musicians, and all around vagabonds are travelling through the state visiting fourteen independent bookstores and singing songs and telling stories. It’s part of the “America Unchained” initiative first put forth by AMIBA, and you’ll recognize some of their stops:

This broad campaign is all about generating awareness for the vital economic impact local indies have on our economies -- at a critical time of year when personal spending spikes and the chains lobby heavily for those dollars.  Unchained mainly is a media and visibility campaign; participation is easy, and we help with lots of ideas and instruction.  We time this campaign to grab public and media attention right before the holiday whirlwind.  The power of visibility for your group cannot be over-stated -- it makes a big difference.  Click here to access information on Unchained and here for awareness-raising and visibility ideas to explore for the holidays.  As always, feel free to contact us with any questions!  Help us help you -- please let us know what your group has planned and the number you calculate (read the campaign information for explanation)  -- we use this information in our national press release and in talking with reporters.  They love to know what's going on locally!

September 2010

Dearest booksellers,

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at #siba10, what's sure to be the best Trade Show yet. But this year, we're especially excited because thanks to the wonders of the Internet and Social Media, we will be able to share much of what's going on at the show with all our SIBA booksellers, even the ones who had to stay home. So if you haven't done so yet, please be sure to bookmark tradeshow.sibaweb.com, and follow along with us on Twitter at @SIndies. You don't want to miss out!

Winners:  The Karin Wilson Frontline Bookseller Scholarship and The Sally Brewster Frontline Bookseller Scholarship and How Tweet It Is ! Winners and the Election Results are in.

SIBA Installs New Director at #SIBA10

The booksellers have spoken and elected Fiction Addiction bookstore owner, Jill Hendrix, to the SIBA Board of Directors.  Jill’s term will begin in 2011.  And Janet Bollum’s term will end at the close of 2010.
Janet has served both the board and the association tirelessly & enthusiastically for many, many years, and looks forward to continuing.  Janet’s final board meeting will be at the #SIBA10 Trade Show.  Janet Bollum has owned The Muse Book Shop in Deland, Florida, for 30 years and has been active in both her local community, and the bookselling community from the beginning.

Jill Hendrix grew up in Greenville, SC. She graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a B.A. in History. She worked for a year and a half in the Editorial Department of St. Martin's Press and then for a series of internet startups in New York City, including Juno Online Services. The startup bug proved contagious and she decided in 2001 to return home and open her own business, Fiction Addiction (www.fiction-addiction.com), an independent bookstore stocking new and used books for adults and children. In 2009, Mrs. Hendrix founded the Book Your Lunch author event program (www.bookyourlunch.com), partnering with local independent restaurant group Table 301 to bring regional authors to Greenville for book discussions over a delicious lunch.

Frontline Booksellers from Fiction Addiction & Page After Page Capture Scholarships!

Frontline bookseller Cynthia Clack has won the Sally Brewster Frontline Bookseller SIBA Scholarship.  Cynthia & her daughter will be attending #SIBA10.  Nominated by Jill Hendrix of Fiction Addiction in Greenville, SC, Cynthia is delighted to be making this trip to #SIBA10 with her daughter and as a freshly-scrubbed bookseller.  Frontline bookseller Sharon Kee has won the Karin Wilson Frontline Bookseller #SIBA10 Scholarship.  Nominated by Doug & Susan Hinkle of Page After Page in Elizabeth City, NC, Sharon is a single mom of four kids.  I’m sure she is ready for some grown-up conversation about her passion for bookselling.  Both Cynthia & Sharon will enjoy two nights room & tax and an All Pass compliments of SIBA in honor of two wonderful booksellers that have served SIBA well – Karin Wilson & Sally Brewster!

Southern indie booksellers are not a glum lot.  Most are excited about all of the potential provided by a largely free internet (bloggers, affiliate programs, Twitter, Facebook, Authors 'Round the South & more).  SIBA is also finding new ways to be relevant to the industry as a whole (selling books for member stores, directing thousands of readers to specific books while promoting her bookstores, pulling together Social Networking Summits & more); always looking to engage our collective klout.

August 2010

**Just confirmed! Walter Mosley will be at #SIBA10!

Dearest booksellers,

Buried in this newsletter towards the bottom is a little question---have you filled out your SIBA Member Survey? If you haven't yet done so, please contact SIBA for the survey link. Your feedback is incredibly important to us--if we don't hear from you, how will we know what you want?

In the meantime, enjoy the summer heat, and we hope we'll see you in Daytona in September for what's going to be a really fun show!

Two Frontline Bookseller Scholarships Available to SIBA Trade Show:

The Karin Wilson Frontline Bookseller Scholarship and The Sally Brewster Frontline Bookseller Scholarship

Frontline booksellers are our biggest asset. They are the face of the store to the customers, greeting booklovers, handselling their favorites, setting the tone, and seeing more than can be imagined.

Highly regarded booksellers often share that attending the SIBA tradeshow as young frontline booksellers changed their lives. For the first time they saw what they did as a profession, filled with sharing and caring colleagues.  They brought back to their stores so much information, enthusiasm, and book suggestions. Others have said that being allowed to attend the SIBA tradeshow reinforces their value to the store and gives them the incentive to increase their efforts to make the store better and more profitable.  While some say "it's in the payroll" when it comes to expenses, isn't it better to think about the people on the payroll as a valuable asset that must be cultivated, educated and inspired?

So, sign up your frontline booksellers to attend the SIBA tradeshow, either with you or in your stead.  To apply for the Karin Wilson or Sally Brewster Scholarship, core member bookstore owners must submit to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. the name & email of a frontline bookseller, who has never been to a SIBA Trade Show, that they would like to receive this scholarship. Scholarship recipients receive a free packet of all the event tickets plus two hotel room nights over the dates of the SIBA Trade Show (valued at over $400).

We want to thank Past Presidents Karin Wilson of Page & Palette; and Sally Brewster of Park Road Books for their service to SIBA with these Frontline Bookseller Scholarships.

Publishers - don't you want to see more frontline booksellers, who are the ones who handsell your books, at the Show?  Donations for more scholarships are welcome, so contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

#SIBA10 – Talk about an Industry Hook-Up!

Southern indie booksellers are not a glum lot.  Most are excited about all of the potential provided by a largely free internet (bloggers, affiliate programs, Twitter, Facebook, Authors 'Round the South & more).  SIBA is also finding new ways to be relevant to the industry as a whole (selling books for member stores, directing thousands of readers to specific books while promoting her bookstores, pulling together Social Networking Summits & more); always looking to engage our collective clout.  SIBA is actively inviting book bloggers, booksellers, publishers, and other industry friends to the show with innovative new programming while keeping bookseller favorites.

SIBA is quite excited to be hosting the 2nd Annual Writers Block Auction in Daytona on September 25th.  All of the authors listed below are invited and we hope to have a huge turn-out. We have 3 wonderful restaurants in Daytona that are going to host us:  Ocean Deck, Caribbean Jack's, and Stonewood Grill; all great local, indie restaurants.  Again this year, the winning bid will not only include dinner with the author, but a choice for a free meal for the author or a 20% discount for the entire party (NOT BOTH).  Bidding will start at $50, and bids must increase by a minimum of $1.  A percentage of proceeds will go to a charity of choice of our sponsoring restaurants.

FREE Personalized Facebook Assistance from AMIBA for SIBA Members

A well-designed and maintained Facebook page can do much, much more than communicate with community members. It can connect your various web presences, serve as a recruiting tool for members and volunteers, boost your search engine rankings and eliminate the need to build a full website until after newer groups have a solid foundation (this can save lots of time and headaches while you solidify your identity).

AMIBA's Lily von Mosch, who teaches social media at Montana State University, will help new or existing AMIBA affiliates design or expand their Facebook pages, lead fans to learn more about your organization and engage them (in the real world and online). For example, leading each new visitor to your mission page before they see your "wall" makes them more likely to visit your website (if applicable) and engage. We'll show you how to create within Facebook an About Us page, Contact page, newsletter sign-up page and explain other options. You'll also learn how to set up Google Analytics to track visits, referring websites, visited pages and more.

See the new framework Lily just set up for AMIBA's Facebook page for ideas (and become a fan/participate while you're at it!). Call Lily at 406-582-1255 for assistance.

#FollowReader Hosts @SIndies

I was one of the guests at the weekly Thursday #FollowReader Twitter Chat this past week and it was so cool; an hour of fast and furious exchange with industry insiders across the globe.  It was pretty cool to be hearing from booksellers and bloggers in Canada, India, and England.
