July 2010

Dearest booksellers,

If we wanted to sum up this newsletter in a series of hashtags, SIBA e-Ink would look something like this:

Come2R#revivals! Not2L8! FREE Hotel, tweet #SIBA10! #holidaycatalog & #bookawards R here! #okra 2! #getinbed w/us and #sellbks!

OK, here's that again, in English:

Come to the SIBA Indie Bookseller Revivals! It's not too late to sign up. Enter to win a free hotel night at the SIBA Trade Show--check out #siba10 on Twitter. It's nearly time to order your holiday catalogs, and the SIBA Book Awards have been announced. We're also taking nominations for the fall Okra picks. Visit the SIBA blog for more information on the "Get in Bed" project, and yes, SIBA has started to promote store online affiliate programs so they can SELL SOME BOOKS. Because that's what it's all about, right?

We want you all to sign up for twitter and make the world safe again for grammatically complete sentences. #READON!

SIBA Indie Bookseller Revivals Only Five Days Away – It’s not too late…

Your SIBA Board Members will play host across the south in July to southern booksellers at The Indie Booksellers Revival.  Each revival will be a day-long immersion kicking off with some hands-on education provided by each store followed by lunch with a writer, and ending with an Indie Inquiry among booksellers about how to go forward successfully in this ever changing industry.    Read more.

#SIBA10 is Around the Corner – Mark Your Calendar

This year, the SIBA Trade Show is being held at sister indie properties that are side by side by the seaside.  And it is predicted that the air will be filled with book-talk among the southern book industry elite.  The most successful Southern Social Networking Summit Redux will be offered on Thursday.  Linda Barrett-Knopp of Malaprops’ credits the summit for Malaprops’ finding its sweet spot.  We are also expecting a host of bloggers so that booksellers can Get in Bed with a Blogger.  Education, Publishers, and Authors, oh my!  The ever popular Moveable Feast is back along with many SIBA favorites.  New this year is the Tweet Up a Rep and the Technology Pavilion where anyone visiting the exhibits can stop and learn a new piece of technology that will help you sell more books.  Twitter, Facebook and Ustream, oh my!

See it all here: http://www.tradeshow.sibaweb.com/schedule

New for 2010! SIBA has partnered with Above the Treeline, provider of the book industry’s digital catalog Edelweiss, to provide Books@SIBA, a digital companion to their upcoming fall 2010 trade show taking place in Daytona, Florida on September 24 – 26. Books@SIBA will provide attendees, interested booksellers, bloggers, and other book industry professionals with an online resource to browse, share, tag, and order titles being featured at this year’s show. SIBA Book Award Winners Announced

This from Rick Bragg:

Now, I can tell Homer Bundrum, Flora Fortenberry, Charles Hardy and the other old cotton millers that the story of their lives has won an award.

Thank y'all, for making it possible for me to do that.

This from Hester Bass:

Dear SIBA Booksellers,

Thank you so much for selecting The Secret World of
Walter Anderson for the 2010 SIBA Children's Book Award! I so appreciate all the support this book has received. I'll be touring again in the fall - let me know what I can do for you!

Best wishes and big hugs,

And this from the Lee Brothers:

Hi, SIBA, we are THRILLED about this!!! We truly believe the southern independents made all the difference with both our cookbooks, and we couldn't be more honored and humbled by their support. We'll be posting the announcement on Facebook and our website of course.

All best,

This from Kathryn Stockett:

"I was so nervous and excited to present The Help to all of you at the SIBA conference before the book was even published, and I am convinced that the book has made its way into so many readers' hands because of you and all the amazing independent booksellers around the south. I am humbled and grateful for this honor."

Kathryn Stockett, author of THE HELP

SIBA Affiliates with Bookstores to Sell Books to Southern Readers at Authors ‘Round the South

In support of SIBA’s core member bookstores that are selling books online and hosting affiliate programs, and to encourage those who are not, SIBA began on June 1 to include purchase options for selected titles to consumers at SIBA’s consumer website, www.authorsroundthesouth.com (ARTS), and in the Lady Banks’ Commonplace Book newsletter, via SIBA core member affiliate programs.  All core bookstore members with affiliate programs will be represented across the selected titles in a fair and thoughtful manner.  SIBA launched the online buy options with Lady Banks’ Bookshelf—a monthly selection of titles of interest to readers of southern fiction, and will grow the options across the Okra Picks and the SIBA Book Awards.  Any money realized from book sales will be applied to the further maintenance of the consumer site and outreach to consumers on behalf of SIBA’s core members.
