Carl Hiaasen’s latest book Chomp is a great book for just about anyone. Hiaasen received a Newbery Honor Award for his Children’s book Hoot, which touches on themes of environmental issues, as do all of his MG/YA books. In Chomp, Hiaasen explores the consequences of reality TV and wildlife issues through the life of Whaoo Cray, who lives in a zoo with his father. When money gets tight Whaoo’s father decides to take a job with a reality TV show and the stations egotistical host (think of an over-the-top Steve Erwin type, with a fake Australian accent). This book is funny and a non-stop adventure, which would make a great gift for anyone who both likes humorous books and animals.
