SIBA needs your vote! (Right now!)
|
|
Monday, Aug. 22 (day after tomorrow) is the last day to vote in the Cvent Photo Contest
Cvent is SIBA’s web-based software solution. I can’t imagine you’d care about that. But I need you to care about the contest they are hosting. They are offering a Grand Prize of $10,000 and many smaller cash prizes and the only way to be considered is to get enough votes via Facebook and I want SIBA to benefit. You can vote every day so please do. You need to be logged in to Facebook and like Cvent. Like our voting page & vote here.

Circle of Sites has been upgraded to promote book sales that directly benefit participating stores. Beginning August 18, the banners will be programmed to link directly to the hosting store's own shopping cart, or to a specific product page on the store's website.
What does this mean for you? As of August, the banners on your website will become "clickable." If you have ecommerce, clicking on the banner should take you to your shopping cart to buy the book. If you don't have ecommerce, then clicking will return you to your home page.
FAQs:
Do I need to do anything to make the banner work?
Probably not. The banners are already coded to return visitors to your home page. If you discover that your banner sends you somewhere else, email

.
Does the banner have to go to my home page?
No, we can direct it to any page on your site you want, like your "staff picks" page. But whichever page you choose, you need to have something on it that promotes the book being advertised.
Hey, I have ecommerce, but the banner doesn't go to my shopping cart!

SIBA tried to account for all the most common shopping cart systems, but if you are using a unique system or have a new ecommerce account we just might not know about it yet. We'll work with you to get the banner link set up for your site.

The Janet Bollum Frontline Bookseller Scholarship – Deadline is September 1, 2011
|
|
Frontline booksellers are our biggest asset. They are the face of the store to the customers, greeting booklovers, handselling their favorites, setting the tone, and seeing more than can be imagined.
Highly regarded booksellers often share that attending the SIBA tradeshow as young frontline booksellers changed their lives. For the first time they saw it as a profession, filled with sharing and caring colleagues. They brought back to their stores so much information, enthusiasm, and book suggestions. Others have said that being allowed to attend the SIBA tradeshow reinforces their value to the store and gives them the incentive to increase their efforts to make the store better and profitable. While some say "it's in the payroll" when it comes to expenses, isn't it better to think about the people on the payroll as a valuable asset that must be cultivated, educated and inspired.
So, sign up your frontline booksellers to attend the SIBA tradeshow, either with you or in your stead. To apply for the Janet Bollum Scholarship, core member bookstore owners must submit to

the name & email of a frontline bookseller that they would like to receive this scholarship, which is a free packet of all the event tickets at the Conference plus two hotel room nights over the dates of the SIBA Trade Show (valued at over $400). The deadline is September 1, 2011.
We want to thank past SIBA Board Member Janet Bollum of Muse Books for her service to SIBA with this Frontline Bookseller Scholarship.

#SIBA11: Talk about a happy coupling!
|
|
Southern indie booksellers are getting hitched. Most are excited about all of the potential provided by a largely free internet (bloggers, affiliate programs, Twitter, Facebook, Authors 'Round the South & more), but are most excited when face to face with a reader. SIBA is finding new ways to be relevant to the industry as a whole (selling books for member stores, directing thousands of readers to specific books while promoting her bookstores, pulling together Club Read & more); always looking to engage our collective klout. SIBA is actively inviting book bloggers, booksellers, publishers, and other industry friends to the show with innovative new programming while keeping bookseller favorites.

New stuff @ #SIBA11 to get excited about
|
|
Every Friday, readers around the world sign on to Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr to celebrate books and share what they’re reading. It’s as simple as read, share, repeat, and the results are remarkable.
FridayReads supports independent bookstores and shares their belief in the value of connecting readers and building community, and we are thrilled to announce this partnership. FridayReads partners Bethanne Patrick and Rebecca Joines Schinsky will present a session at SIBA 11's Booksellers School about practical tips for making your store the center of your customers’ communities, online and off. As a sponsor of Club Read, FridayReads will share news of the event with their participants and encourage them to attend by purchasing tickets through a participating independent bookstore. Patrick and Joines Schinsky will appear on the Talking Book Clubs panel at Club Read and look forward to many future opportunities for partnership with the SIBA, NAIBA, and independent bookstores nationwide.

Introducing the new Southern Indie Bestseller List, her ladyship style
|
|
Some of you may have noticed that the Southern Indie Bestseller list recently received a make-over. Starting in August, SIBA has combined the bestseller list with the popular Lady Banks' Commonplace Book, turning Lady Banks into a weekly publication that features not only the bestselling books in the south, but news, reviews and gossip of a literary nature, as well as the ARTS calendar of events at SIBA stores. Each issue will also feature a SIBA member bookstore and one of the STARS authors currently traveling in SIBA territory.
See the new issue here
To make sure that your store's events are on the calendar, be sure to post them to Authors Round the South.
