Celebrate Independents! SIBA’s 2012 Book Award Winners

The best in southern literature, from the people who would know. . .Southern Independent (and independently-minded!) Booksellers

SIBA Book Award

(Columbia, SC) Southern indie booksellers once again demonstrate their independence of mind by choosing an excitingly eclectic collection of books for the 2012 SIBA Book Awards.

Jo MacDonald Saw a PondChildren’s Winner: Jo MacDonald Saw a Pond by Mary Quattlebaum (Dawn Publications)

“A delightful riff on ‘Old MacDonald Had a Farm’” -- Books Plus

Blurp. Croak. Quack. What is making those sounds? Come along with Jo MacDonald and learn about the wild creatures at the pond on her grandfather's farm. You'll find fish, frogs, ducks - and a few surprises.  Author Mary Quattlebaum engages little ones with rhythm, repetition, wordplay, and onomatopoeia and illustrator Laura Bryant charms them with lively watercolors of a pond community. And check out the outdoor activities and games in the back, sure to encourage young naturalists at home and school.

The New Southern Garden CookbookCooking Winner: The New Southern Garden Cookbook by Sheri Castle (University of North Carolina Press)

“This book helped me make the most of my vegetable garden!” --Quarter Moon Books and Gifts

In The New Southern Garden Cookbook, well-known food writer Sheri Castle aims to make "what's in season" the answer to "what's for dinner?" This timely cookbook, with dishes for omnivores and vegetarians alike, celebrates and promotes the delicious, healthful homemade meals centered on the diverse array of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in the South, and in most of the rest of the nation as well.

Iron HouseFiction Winner: Iron House by John Hart (St. Martin’s Press)

“I enjoyed Iron House because it had so much more to offer the reader than ‘whodunit.’  John Hart is southern mystery writing at its best.”  -- The Country Bookshop

A New York Times-bestselling author delivers his most devastating novel yet--the remarkable story of two orphaned brothers separated by violence at an early age. When a boy is brutally murdered in their orphanage, one brother runs and takes the blame with him. Twenty years later--a seasoned killer--he returns to North Carolina.

Lions of the WestNonfiction Winner:  Lions of the West by Robert Morgan (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill)
“I really appreciate Mr. Morgan's distinction that the historical figures through which he delves into the westward expansion weren't all ‘hero’, nor all ‘villain’, but usually a mixture of both.”  -- The Fountainhead Bookstore

From Thomas Jefferson's birth in 1743 to the California Gold rush in 1849, America's Manifest Destiny comes to life in Morgan 's skilled hands. Jefferson, a naturalist and visionary, dreamed that the U.S. would stretch across the continent. The account of how that dream became reality unfolds in the stories of Jefferson and nine other Americans whose adventurous spirits and lust for land pushed the westward boundaries.

Abandoned QuarryPoetry Winner: Abandoned Quarry  by John Lane (Mercer University Press)

Lane's poetry is rich with love of place and environment.”  --City Lights Bookstore

Abandoned Quarry is a collection of poems by one of the South's most admired environmental writers. The collection makes available for the first time under one cover poems from a dozen full collections and chapbooks. The poems range in subject matter through relationships, nature, improvisational pieces, and rants about the strangeness of the modern condition.

Darwen Arkwright andthe Peregrine PactYoung Adult Winner: Darwen Arkwright and the Peregrine Pact by A.J. Hartley (Razorbill )

“Takes place in Atlanta Georgia, and incorporates fantasy along with the real struggles of being a teen in a new place, adjusting to a new school, and a new culture.” –Fountainhead Bookstore

Eleven-year-old Darwen Arkwright has spent his whole life in a tiny town in England. So when he is forced to move to Atlanta, Georgia, to live with his aunt, he knows things will be different - but what he finds there is beyond even his wildest imaginings!  Darwen discovers an enchanting world through the old mirror hanging in his closet - a world that holds as many dangers as it does wonders. Scrobblers on motorbikes with nets big enough to fit a human boy. Gnashers with no eyes, but monstrous mouths full of teeth. Flittercrakes with bat-like bodies and the faces of men! Along with his new friends Rich and Alexandra, Darwen becomes entangled in an adventure and a mystery that involves the safety of his entire school.

The Winners!

Seasoned booksellers: Lend your expertise to an emerging bookseller and SIBA will pay your way to the show!

SIBA wants to pay the way of seasoned booksellers (30 year or more veterans) to #SIBA12 in Naples, Florida.  We'd cover travel, hotel stay, and include an all pass to all of the SIBA meal functions.  And here's the rub:  We want you to share your hotel room with a green bookseller (in business 5 years or less) from a different store.  The point of this pairing is for your expertise and their enthusiasm to mashup into a SIBA weekend of sharing & shameless exchange.
If you have been a bookseller for 30 years or more and would be willing to take an all-expenses paid trip to the #SIBA12 show in return for lending your experience to the next bookselling generation, then email Wanda. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Deadline is August 15!

Emerging booksellers: Make your SIBA show really count. Room with an experienced bookseller and learn from the best in the business!

If you have been in business for less than five years, then SIBA will match you up with someone who has been there, done that and you can work the show together, trading ideas and inspiration for wisdom and experience. Email Wanda if you are interested in participating, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Deadline is August 15!

Sophie Hannah is the author of seven internationally bestselling and award-winning psychological thrillers - Little Face, The Truth-Teller's Lie, The Wrong Mother, The Dead Lie Down, The Cradle in the Grave, The Other Woman's House, and Kind of Cruel (British title - not available in the US yet). Boost Sales in Your Store

Check out more money-makers to shake here:  http://pinterest.com/wjewell/cool-stuff-bookstores-do-besides-sell-books/

  1. Host a workshop for writers in your store!  McIntyre’s has had success with author Marjorie Hudson who has hosted numerous Writing Classes; and Flyleaf Books is hosting Pitchapalooza with authors Arielle Eckstut & David Henry Sterry.

  2. Remember your indie presses.  Check your stock to make sure you have your favorite indie titles on hand and feature them with a shelf talker or in a display.

  3. Host a Book Club Giveaway Frenzy.  I attended one of these at Fountain Bookstore recently and it was quite exciting.  When hosting a paperback writer at Fountain, Kelly includes Book Club Giveaway Frenzy.  Here she pitches upcoming titles and offers the galley to anyone in the audience who expresses interest.  Believe it or not, I came away with a galley and purchased two books.  If you buy a book, you get to pick a book off of the Book Club Giveaway Frenzy Shelf!

In this edition of SIBA eInk we're all about re-engerizing! Pick one good idea to try. Visit one bookseller revival. Make one recommendation for the holiday catalog. Watch one award-winning bookseller video. Answer our one question survey. Make today the day you do that one new thing that will further your business!

Take Away for Today – In Search of One Good Idea?

Pick one thing you can do right now!

  1.  Post the following on your Facebook page: CODE READ:  You have exactly 5 hours to come in the store and say “CODE READ” for a 5% discount on your entire purchase.  The clock is ticking.  Spread the word and get here before (here place the time 5 hours from now).
  2. Use your POS to tell you which customer spent the most money in your store last week.  Pull a thank you card and fire off a hand-written note to that customer with a $5 gift card in it.
  3. Switch out a display.  Move books in the back to the front.  Refresh a section pulling returns and changing what is face out.
  4. Look over your upcoming events.  Think about other businesses you could partner with to increase outreach. Invite the owner and a visiting author to a meal, or take your author to their business for a visit.  Build these partnerships.
  5.  If you know the local winery or bakery or bike shop, ask them what books they’d like to see on the shelves and then make sure they know you have them.
  6. Email your favorite photo of your store cat or dog or bird or spider to your local printer and ask them to print full color postcards, and then sell them to your customers. (Use these for #2)
  7. Spend some time on your own website.  Is it easy to buy a gift card? A book?  Is it easy to find your location?  To call or email your store?
  8. Spend some time on some other websites.  Check out this Pinterest board – Cool Stuff Bookstores Do Besides Sell Books
  9. And while you are there take a look at Gifts Galore for Bookstores and find a new item to stock in your store.
  10. Grab a post-it note and write some praises for the last book you read, stick it on the book and put it in the Staffs Picks section.

You Don't Sweat Much for a Fat Girl

This is Retail

Bookmans VideoA couple weeks ago SIBA asked the people on the SIBA Listserv what kind of education they'd like to see offered at the #SIBA12 show. One of the most common answers was a request for better information on trends in the retail industry. Why are Target and Bed Bath & Beyond changing they're display styles? What do they know that we don't? Where do we get information on how consumers shop?

To meet that request, SIBA has become a member of The National Retail Federation, which has an incredible number of resources available to its members. The NRF recently held a "This is Retail" video contest, inviting retailers to submit their stories about what they do and why they do it.

A bookstore's video made the top 10:
