2010 SIBA Book Award Finalists Announced…here are the contenders!

SIBA will host the second annual Writers Block Auction in Daytona, Florida, and we hope to have a large preponderance of the nominees in attendance.  Thanks to all of you who returned your long ballot and took the time to vote for the SIBA Book Awards:

It’s a southern story. . .

He was known as Eli the Good, but he still had to Shiver when he saw The Secret World of Walter Anderson. “Scat!” he shooed the strange-looking cat, “A Good Mule is Hard to Find and there’s Hard Work to be done In The Sanctuary of Outcasts.”  It was The Most They Ever Had, but hey, You Can’t Drink All Day if You Don’t Start in the Morning. And Zeitoun always had A Quiet Belief in Angels to Help him resist that Devil’s Punchbowl. He was The Last Child to carry that Dead Weight down to the South of Broad, because The Lee Brothers might be Simple, Fresh Southern, but the Southern Farmer’s Market only made him dream more often of My New Orleans.

See the list of finalists!

The Ultimate Road Trip: An Ode to Garden and Gun and Southern Bookstores

By Kelly Justice, SIBA President, Fountain Bookstore Owner

I have this dream of the ultimate road trip.

I'd start with a full tank of gas, my (mostly) trusty map application on my phone, and a couple of grand in cash to spend on books....and I'd head South.  This dream has been pretty vague until recently when I checked my mail slot and in it was the February/March issue of Garden and Gun.

The Social Side of SIBA

Twitter birdSIBA recognized several years ago that one of the best ways it could help its members would be to actively reach out to readers—their customers—and promote our stores to their book clubs, libraries,, writing groups, coffee klatches, stitch-n-bitch sessions, etc.  And to actively reach out to publishers, authors, industry media and literary groups and organizations to let them know where our stores are and what they do. That mission was the reason behind the development of Authors Round the South (ARTS) and the Southern Traveling Authors Registration Service (STARS).  And it is the primary reason SIBA maintains an active and visible presence in the social networking sphere.

So what does SIBA do for stores through social networking?

  • We maintain both an industry-oriented (SIBA, Wanda Jewell) and consumer-oriented (ARTS, Lady Banks) presence in all the major social networking venues—Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, etc.
  • We tweet, retweet, follow, forward, friend and share literary news, events schedules and announcements. Everything posted to the ARTS calendar gets distributed to our fullest capacity.
  • We create, develop and maintain relationships with authors, publishers, and media  and forward information and news about our member stores to them.
  • We create, develop and maintains relationships with readers and people who love southern literature, and make sure they know about our member stores as a resource for great book recommendations.
  • We friend and follow all our members that we can find and pass along their news and announcements to our own collection of friends and followers.

If you aren’t doing so already, follow us at @SIndies and @ladybanks, or find us on Facebook.

Leila MeachamLeila Meacham: Reinventing the Epic Saga
Author 2 Author Series

A conversation with Jackie K. Cooper

When you read Leila Meacham’s best selling novel Roses it is a little like stepping back in time. This seventy-one year old retired school teacher writes in the style and manner of an Edna Ferber or a Margaret Mitchell, but there is nothing old fashioned or out dated about the content of her book. She just writes a story that can best be classified as a sweeping saga that crosses several generations in relating the stories of a Texas family. It is a style we have not seen lately but it suits her and her story telling abilities. Read the full interview here

2010 SIBA Book Award Long Ballot has been mailed…here are the contenders:

SIBA will host the second annual Writers Block Auction in Daytona, Florida, and these are the writers we hope to have in attendance.  We have had to collapse the Children & Young Adult titles into a single category for this year and the nominated poetry titles have been placed in Non-Fiction or Children/YA.  So even though we will not be giving these in 2010, we will leave the categories available for nominations going forward.  Either way, it is a great list.  Core members will soon receive their long ballot in the mail (one per store) and are asked to mail it back before the deadline. http://www.sibaweb.com/siba-news/siba-news/166-2010-siba-book-award-long-list-announced

SIBA as Publisher – Opportunities for bookstores to sell unique content

SIBA has published the Southern Indie Lit Crossword Puzzle Book.  This is a great combo for readers and puzzlers and collects ten years of SIBA Book Award Winners in one place.  The attractive price point of $9.95 and 50% discount to SIBA Bookstores only makes it an attractive title to have at point of sale.  Hear author Reeden Wright discuss her journey with the book at the South Carolina Book Festival.  Available from Ingram, 978-0-9825205-0-5, SRP $9.95

We are neck and neck with the Northern California Booksellers Association to be the next region to qualify to get our own regional reader.  But we need your stories. See more details and mock cover.

Whether maintaining a website, distributing an email newsletter, writing a blog or twittering, pictures are worth…, well, you know.  And everystockphoto has searchable photos that are free to use.  You can have an account at everystockphoto, but it is not necessary for searching and using free pics…I had written a post about scary sites and searched “scary” after I had named the post – Short & Sweet & Scary – and loved the photo I found.  It was exactly short, at one-time sweet, and very scary!  I needed a paper clip, searched paper clip, and found the perfect paperclip -.  Need pictures of books?

February 2010

SIBA Industry member Unbridled Books advertises this compelling letter from one author about another.  Elise Blackwell’s An Unfinished Score is a current Okra Pick!

An Unfinished ScoreDear Unbridled Books,

I pushed to sign Elise Blackwell to the Alabama Book Festival because she's just the sort of writer these events are designed to introduce audiences to: literary and yet accessible, challenging but not alienating, uplifting without pandering.

A lot of readers crave sophisticated, complex characters instead of stereotypes. They want fictional people whose actions offer a way of assessing the way we live now, and for me that's what Elise's novels do. To my thinking, her work has the same broad appeal as Anita Shreve's and Carol Shields'.

Book festivals are great opportunities to bring these sorts of deserving writers onto the radar of audiences who might not otherwise know about them. I have a feeling readers who come out to meet Elise and learn about An Unfinished Score on April 17 will walk away saying, 'Why am I only now discovering this person?

Sincerely,

Kirk Curnutt

NEW - Independent E-Books Affiliate Program for Independent Booksellers

One of the fastest growing sectors in the publishing industry is that of digital media, (eBooks and Digital Audio Books).  Consumer demand is increasing rapidly and revenue from eBooks alone has increased nearly 700% in just 3 years.  We expect that with improved reader devices and formats the demand will continue to grow substantially for the foreseeable future.  With a low cost of entry, the expanding e-book and digital audio market offers retailers the opportunity to sell more content to more readers than ever before.

Independent eBooks is an independently owned digital media website created by book industry and technology professionals. Independent eBooks provides the independent bookseller the opportunity to interface your bookstore website with Independent eBooks to sell digital media to your market 24/7.  With over 290,000 titles available, (which is updated weekly) you are enabled to offer eBooks to your customers in 3 popular formats: Adobe, Microsoft, and eReader (formerly Palm).  The formats available for each title are dependent upon what formats the publisher delivers to us.  When a purchase is made we operate in the background to deliver the eBook to the customer in the format ordered and with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) that the publisher requires.  The retailer is paid for each eBook successfully downloaded by their customers.

2009 Holiday Catalog Summary – SIBA Stores Distribute Over One Million Catalogs

Every fall SIBA sponsors a consumer holiday catalog for its members. The full color catalog is professionally designed, customized with each individual store’s logo and address, and features titles of both national and regional interest. Because the catalog is provided free of charge to SIBA member bookstores, it has become the major marketing piece for many stores during the busy holiday season. Bookstores distribute over one million of these catalogs to their customers and their communities through mailings, handouts, store displays and newspaper inserts over the holiday selling season. SIBA augments store marketing efforts with a special catalog “toolkit” containing marketing materials, shelf talkers, flyers, posters, links to publisher resources and online title and information.
