What's in this edition of SIBA eInk? Help SIBA win $10,000 (We promise we'll spend it on you!) Circle of Sites gets an upgrade. (It's very cool stuff) Don't miss this month's Galley Giveaway. It's also time to pick some Okra. The Holiday Catalog title list is announced. Frontline bookseller scholarship is available for #SIBA11. Friday Reads gets on board with indie bookstores. Club Read earns booksellers money. (See you can get something for almost nothing!) The Southern Indie Bestseller List gets a make over. It's time to vote for your board members, and just in case you want to buy a bookstore....

SIBA needs your vote! (Right now!)

Monday, Aug. 22 (day after tomorrow) is the last day to vote in the Cvent Photo ContestGet in Bed

Cvent is SIBA’s web-based software solution.  I can’t imagine you’d care about that.  But I need you to care about the contest they are hosting.  They are offering a Grand Prize of $10,000 and many smaller cash prizes and the only way to be considered is to get enough votes via Facebook and I want SIBA to benefit.  You can vote every day so please do.  You need to be logged in to Facebook and like Cvent.  Like our voting page & vote here.

Circle of Sites upgrade

Circle of Sites has been upgraded to promote book sales that directly benefit participating stores. Beginning August 18, the banners will be programmed to link directly to the hosting store's own shopping cart, or to a specific product page on the store's website.

What does this mean for you? As of August, the banners on your website will become "clickable." If you have ecommerce, clicking on the banner should take you to your shopping cart to buy the book. If you don't have ecommerce, then clicking will return you to your home page.

FAQs:

Do I need to do anything to make the banner work?

Probably not. The banners are already coded to return visitors to your home page. If you discover that your banner sends you somewhere else, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Does the banner have to go to my home page?

No, we can direct it to any page on your site you want, like your "staff picks" page. But whichever page you choose, you need to have something on it that promotes the book being advertised.

Hey, I have ecommerce, but the banner doesn't go to my shopping cart!

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. SIBA tried to account for all the most common shopping cart systems, but if you are using a unique system or have a new ecommerce account we just might not know about it yet. We'll work with you to get the banner link set up for your site.

Also, stores on the Retailer Place platform from Baker and Taylor need to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to have their links turned on.

The Janet Bollum Frontline Bookseller Scholarship – Deadline is September 1, 2011

Frontline booksellers are our biggest asset. They are the face of the store to the customers, greeting booklovers, handselling their favorites, setting the tone, and seeing more than can be imagined.

Highly regarded booksellers often share that attending the SIBA tradeshow as young frontline booksellers changed their lives. For the first time they saw it as a profession, filled with sharing and caring colleagues.  They brought back to their stores so much information, enthusiasm, and book suggestions. Others have said that being allowed to attend the SIBA tradeshow reinforces their value to the store and gives them the incentive to increase their efforts to make the store better and profitable.  While some say "it's in the payroll" when it comes to expenses, isn't it better to think about the people on the payroll as a valuable asset that must be cultivated, educated and inspired.

So, sign up your frontline booksellers to attend the SIBA tradeshow, either with you or in your stead.  To apply for the Janet Bollum Scholarship, core member bookstore owners must submit to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. the name & email of a frontline bookseller that they would like to receive this scholarship, which is a free packet of all the event tickets at the Conference plus two hotel room nights over the dates of the SIBA Trade Show (valued at over $400).  The deadline is September 1, 2011.

We want to thank past SIBA Board Member Janet Bollum of Muse Books for her service to SIBA with this Frontline Bookseller Scholarship.

Publishers - don't you want to see more frontline booksellers who are the ones who handsell your books?  Donations for more scholarships are welcome, so contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

#SIBA11: Talk about a happy coupling!

Southern indie booksellers are getting hitched.  Most are excited about all of the potential provided by a largely free internet (bloggers, affiliate programs, Twitter, Facebook, Authors 'Round the South & more), but are most excited when face to face with a reader.  SIBA is finding new ways to be relevant to the industry as a whole (selling books for member stores, directing thousands of readers to specific books while promoting her bookstores, pulling together Club Read & more); always looking to engage our collective klout.  SIBA is actively inviting book bloggers, booksellers, publishers, and other industry friends to the show with innovative new programming while keeping bookseller favorites.

Is it Friday? Then it must be #FridayReads!

Friday ReadsEvery Friday, readers around the world sign on to Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr to celebrate books and share what they’re reading. It’s as simple as read, share, repeat, and the results are remarkable.

FridayReads supports independent bookstores and shares their belief in the value of connecting readers and building community, and we are thrilled to announce this partnership. FridayReads partners Bethanne Patrick and Rebecca Joines Schinsky will present a session at  SIBA 11's Booksellers School about practical tips for making your store the center of your customers’ communities, online and off. As a sponsor of Club Read, FridayReads will share news of the event with their participants and encourage them to attend by purchasing tickets through a participating independent bookstore. Patrick and Joines Schinsky will appear on the Talking Book Clubs panel at Club Read and look forward to many future opportunities for partnership with the SIBA, NAIBA, and independent bookstores nationwide.

Each issue will also feature a SIBA member bookstore and one of the STARS authors currently traveling in SIBA territory.

Why Go to the Great American Bargain Book Show (GABBS)?

What Booksellers Are Saying About Remainder Shows. . .

“I never miss the Spring Book Show in Atlanta because I need lots of great book bargains.” -- Doug Robinson, Eagle Eye Books, Atlanta, GA

“This is a no-brainer for us -- we've had great success with selling discount books . . . My biggest problem is that there's always so MUCH great stuff that I want to bring it ALL home!” -- Jeff McCord, Bound To Be Read Books, Atlanta GA

“Do you need to increase your bottom line?  Are you looking for an inexpensive way to make a great display for the holidays or any other special occasion?  Is it time to restock those student classics?  If you answered yes to any of these questions you need to attend GABB's.”  -- Janet Bollum, The Muse Book Shop, DeLand, Florida

"The Spring Book Show & GABBS are THE places to purchase bargain books and remainders. These items increase my store's profit margin while at the same time giving my customers lower-price options when they shop. In today's tough economic times, that's a win-win for everyone.”-- Jill Hendrix, Fiction Addiction, Greenville, SC

The Great American Bargain Book Show-the sister show to the Spring Book Show in Atlanta--delivers a bit of "southern comfort" this year. A great line-up of educational sessions featuring some familiar faces and designed to help booksellers make the most of their bargain, remainder and used book inventory to maximize profits.

Bargain Books: "What I Buy & How I Use Them"
Wednesday - Aug 10   8:30-9:30 am, Room 110

How does one approach the exhibit floor?  Describe your criteria / decision process when buying?  Besides marking the books for sell in your shop, how else do you use them?  As incentives to buy newer books by the same author?  As a partner book with a new book on a given topic?  As prizes for store programs?  Presenters:  Janet Bollum, The Muse Book Shop, Deland, Florida; Jeff McCord, Bound to be Read Books, Atlanta, GA; Doug Robinson, Eagle Eye Bookstore, Atlanta, GA

Used Books: Buying, Pricing, Stocking & Shelving
Wednesday - Aug 10, 9:40-10:30 am, Room 110

How do used books get on your store shelves?  Do you buy from customers?  How do you price them, both to buy, and then to sell?  Where do you keep them before they get on the shelf?  How do you shelve them?  Have you tried different ways?  Does one seem to work better than another?  Is rotation and fresh product the answer? Presenters Jill Hendrix, Fiction Addiction, Greenville, SC; Jeff McCord, Bound to be Read Books, Atlanta, GA; Doug Robinson, Eagle Eye Bookstore, Atlanta, GA

Antiquarian Books:  "How to Spot Them & How to Sell Them"
Thursday - Aug 11, 9:00-10:00 am, Room 111

What's the difference between used & antiquarian?  Do you develop the customer first, and then find the antiquarian book?  Where do you find them?  What kind of research is involved?  How do you price them?  How do your customers know you have a given title?  What about book repair?  Presenter: Janet Bollum, The Muse Book Shop, Deland, Florida

All Seminars will be held in the Hynes Convention Center.

Opening or Buying a Bookstore?
Changes and Opportunities

“I cannot live in a city without a book store” was what best-selling author Ann Patchett recently said while she was on her book tour for her new novel, State of Wonder, and asked by Diane Rehm why she was going to open an independent bookstore in Nashville, Tennessee.

Like Nashville, cities around the country have lost their only bookstores with the closing of hundreds of Borders locations and smaller mall bookstores. While ebooks have gained in popularity, independent booksellers can now claim the market for print books and ebooks, thanks to ABA’s partnership with Google. With markets wide open, there are more business opportunities this year than in the past three decades.

Retail bookselling is a unique business that demands attention to many different aspects of the start-up process and ongoing operations. Long-term sustainability requires that owners capitalize on a bricks-and-mortar store’s competitive advantages, understand how the industry works, and add be able to add the entrepreneurial energy and creativity. As is the case with any new career, training is a critical part of preparation – especially with a lower margin business like bookselling.

The workshop retreat Opening a Bookstore: The Business Essentials will take place September 12-16 on Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, FL). The week will include key topics including strategies for making a profit in retail bookselling, best practices for driving sales, achieving efficiencies with a computerized management system, creating a magical sense of place with store design and merchandising, buying and managing inventory, and much more.

Co-sponsored by the American Booksellers Assocaition, the workshop is offered in spring and fall each year and is facilitated by Donna Paz Kaufman and Mark Kaufman of The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates. ABA members are eligible for up to a $200 discount on tuition. For details, visit www.PazBookBiz.com or call 800/260-8605.

Behind the Southern Indie Bestseller List

How do books get on the Southern Indie BestsellerList?

SIBA posts a bestseller list each week of the best-selling books in southern indie bookstores across the south.  This list is generated weekly thanks to the generous efforts of the American Booksellers Association and provided to regional associations across the country

It is always interesting to observe books that make the national list, or are unique to the southern list. SIBA makes a point of highlighting books unique to its own list, as well as books that have received strong bookseller support--as Okra Picks, Book Award titles, or books by southern "STARS" authors.

While the bestseller list is provided weekly, the list of reporting stores is provided quarterly and may not reflect every store that reports, although it does reflect the majority of reporting stores.  Stores can download the bestseller list for in-store placement and they can link to the list from their websites.

SIBA Bookseller Temp Agency

There are many experienced booksellers in the region. Most would love more hours of bookselling and the opportunity to experience another store close by. Or possibly you know someone who isn't working in the store anymore, but could use some temporary work?

Bookstores are always in need of temporary help during events, staff vacations, and to attend SIBA and ABA professional events.

To facilitate this need, SIBA will compile a list of booksellers who are available to work temporarily at stores across the region. We'll keep this list on our website, and you can refer to it whenever the need arises.

Publishers - if you have bookselling experience, and would like to keep your bookselling skills fresh, sign up too.

Thirty Seven SIBA stores participated in the 2011 Holiday Catalog Survey.  SIBA appreciates the input.  These stores plan to distribute more than 300,000 catalogs this year.  When asked, “What do you wish was different about the holiday catalog?”, booksellers provided a wide variety of good ideas and SIBA wants to update you as to the changes that have come about as a result of the survey results!

  1. Increase FREE imprinting area to 4 inches on the back cover and 3 ½ on the front
  2. Continue to include ISBNs
  3. Add "Coming in November" or "Pub date January" for any titles publishing after October
  4. Include Bookseller Picks, but we need to hear from you – Booksellers:  Suggest a Book!
  5. SIBA Book Awards will include alternate editions when available.
