January 2011

Dearest booksellers,

Happy, happy New Year. SIBA has lots of things planned for 2011 that will help you run your businesses, and SELL MORE BOOKS. To help us with this ongoing mission, please take a moment to fill out the SIBA One Question Survey:

SIBA’s One Question Survey
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZNY3VYM

Bottom Line:  This will assist the SIBA Board of Directors and Staff in providing for core members.

SIBA Book Awards 2011

See the nominees to date here: http://www.sibaweb.com/siba-book-award/nominations

Make your nomination here:  http://www.sibaweb.com/siba-book-award/nomination-form

And remember that all of the nominees are invited to participate in The Writers Block Auction at #SIBA11.

Bottom Line:  The SIBA Book Awards translate into both sales and promotion of SIBA’s core members.  Make sure it is a list you are proud to promote.

Okra Picks Spring 2011!

Okra PicksNominate your spring Okra Picks here: http://www.sibaweb.com/okra/okra-pick
We will announce the next crop of Okra Picks on January 31

SIBA’s Welcome Kit & Twitter Contest!

The SIBA Welcome Kit, newly updated for 2011, is an extensive piece that outlines the many benefits of SIBA Membership. Download a copy and make sure you are getting the most out of SIBA.

Along with encouraging you to spend an afternoon exploring the ins and out of the SIBA Welcome Kit, we also want to promote the most valuable and popular benefits in a new monthly column Bennie & the Gets! here in SIBA Ink and at my blog:  Wanda’s Wonderful Book Blog

Below is the first of many Bennie & the Gets!

Bottom Line:  Any core member who follows @SIndies and tweets the following: I read Bennie and the Gets! will be entered into a drawing for a free ALL PASS meal ticket at #SIBA11.  The deadline for tweets is Valentine’s Day

We will be hosting a Twitter Contest in every SIBA eInk between now and August, 2011.

Bennie & the Gets!

This month’s highlighted benefit of SIBA Membership is the Free Book Stimulus Plan (FBSP)

Any core member store can participate and it is a high-value perk for which the bookstore has to do very little.  Check out the above link for materials for both in-store and on-line.

You will see where we have added a new facet to FBSP via the Caught U Reading Program  that came out of the Good Ideas Breakfast at #SIBA10.

We have member stores who have placed the FBSP website on their receipts and stores that have printed out the mail-back form as a bag stuffer.  SIBA has collected a contact list of hundreds and hundreds of southern readers via this program and does outreach on members’ behalf regularly. We have had many participants from Alpharetta, Suwanee, and Duluth, GA; Elizabeth City and Franklin, NC; and Tampa, FL.  We’ve given away over 2000 books. It is a great way to thank your customers and who doesn’t love getting a free book in the mail?

Bottom Line:  Anyone who shops in your store can mail their receipt attached to the form found at www.freebookstimulusplan.com and they are mailed a free book handpicked by me from my library of books from 20 years with SIBA.

Writers for the Rec CrossSIBA Partners with Writers for the Red Cross

Booksellers & writers partner to raise awareness for the Red Cross

http://www.writersfortheredcross.org will go live in mid-February, with active fundraising beginning March 1-31.  It is modeled on the highly successful “Do the Write Thing for Nashville” fundraiser, which raised $74K in ten days following last spring’s devastating floods.

This national, online event is intended to raise funds for, as well as awareness about, the Red Cross and its work in communities.  Writers for the Red Cross (WRC) will be auctioning off publishing related items and services donated by authors, publicists, agents, and editors. They will also have daily guest posts from authors about “What the Red Cross Means to Me” and a daily countdown of “31 Things You Didn’t Know About the Red Cross.”

How can your store participate?
For $0:
Stores which have a website affiliate relationship with SIBA will automatically be included.  Key titles on writersfortheredcross.org will be linked to SIBA affiliates for purchase, and SIBA will donate any commission earned for those sales back to the Red Cross on behalf of the bookseller.
If you are an IndieBound eCommerce store and don’t have your affiliate option turned on, there is still time to be included. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before February 15.

For $99
Writers for the Red Cross will include your store and a link on their bookstore “Appreciation Page.”  Throughout the online event, SIBA and WRC will be doing call-outs to this page and urge visitors to explore the independent bookstores featured there.

For $199
In addition to a link on the “Appreciation Page,” Your store will be featured prominently as a “featured bookseller” on the home page of the event, along with an image of your choice linked to your store website or email.  Your store and image will be featured for at least one day on the site, perhaps longer depending on how many stores choose to participate.

For both participation levels
SIBA and WRC will help get the word out of any event or promotion organized by individual stores in support of the Red Cross.  The site will include an online calendar of all bookstore activities supporting the Red Cross (Blood Drives, author events, in-store sales, etc.)—as well as upbeat blog post mentions of bookseller efforts to help the Red Cross.

Time to Renew Your SIBA Membership

Banners-for-Dues program returns with more options

Nominations for the SIBA Book Award, and nominations for the Okra Picks, are only eligible if they are made by or on behalf of SIBA Member stores.  It's a new year, and that means it’s time to renew your membership dues for next year.

You can do that here

Or, you’ll be happy to hear that SIBA is once again offering its Circle of Sites Banner-for Dues program.  If you allow SIBA to run a banner on your website, we will waive your membership dues for 2011. Banners change weekly, with no other work or requirement from you. Your membership is sponsored by advertising publishers.

What’s new for Circle of Sites in 2011?

  1. We now offer the option of a horizontal or vertical banner.
  2. In order to be eligible for free membership dues, the banner must appear “above the fold” –that is, visible to viewers when they first open your store site.

Stores interested in participating in the 2011 Circle of Sites program should contact Nicki at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
