What are Okra Picks? A dozen fresh titles chosen each season that bookstores are especially excited about. The picks are southern in nature but can be in any genre. What is the goal of the Okra Picks? A regional variation of the Indie Next list, which inspired the program, Okra Picks are a coordinated region-wide marketing program designed to allow stores to promote the new southern books they are especially excited about and thus demonstrate the power of indie booksellers to break out new titles, and naturally to help them sell more books. How are books nominated for the Okra Picks? Booksellers can send their pick to okrapicks@sibaweb.com. Only SIBA Bookstores can nominate a book, but any of the store staff can nominate. How are Okra Picks, uh, picked? SIBA compiles all the nominations for each nomination period and chooses the 12 most popular to be that season’s “patch” of Okra Picks. Nomination periods follow publishing seasons. The first nomination period closes September 1, 2009. The first set of Okra picks will be announced at the SIBA Fall Trade Show. Nomination periods: - Spring: Closes March 1, announced March 30
- Summer: Closes June 1, announced June 30
- Fall: Closes September 1, announced at SIBA Trade Show
- Winter: Closes December 1, announced December 30
What can publishers do to promote a book to the Okra Picks? SIBA will compile a regional galley giveaway for potential Okra Picks. We need a jacket image (jpeg) and a 100 word description as well as basic bibliographic information and publication date. Your description should end with: Email: yourname@yourpublisher.com for a free galley while supplies last. The first galley giveaway listing is free of charge. Email your galley offer to nicki@sibaweb.com How will the Okra Picks be promoted? SIBA will be actively promoting these titles to both consumers and booksellers. There will be The Okra Picks Patch at www.authorsroundthesouth.com. Lady Banks will introduce The Okra Picks to over 5000 consumer subscribers in the September issue. SIBA will post at www.sibaweb.com any materials you provide on The Okra Picks toolkit for booksellers as well as SIBA-designed materials to promote The Okra Picks.
