Who can nominate a book?

Books can be nominated by SIBA-member booksellers . But stores can submit nominations on behalf of the their customers, so if you are not a bookseller, you can request your local bookstore nominate a title on your behalf.

About the SIBA Book Award:

Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on their favorite hand-sell books of the year. These are the Southern books they have most enjoyed selling to customers; the ones that they couldn't stop talking about; the ones most often pushed into a customer’s hands with the words “You have got to read this!” The SIBA Book Award was created to recognize great books of Southern origin, as determined by people whose business it is to know great books—the independent booksellers of the South.

Books are nominated in six categories, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cooking young adult and children's. For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, and it must have been originally published within the 2008 calendar year. Only SIBA-member booksellers can submit nominations and vote on the selection of finalists. Winners will be chosen from the list of finalists by a jury of SIBA booksellers.

Larry McMurtry is not the only bestselling author to own a bookstore; in January, Kay Hooper and her business manager Linda Parks bought the 18-year-old Fireside Books & Gifts in Forest Lake, N.C. Parks, along with former owner Suzanne Ledford, attended last weekend's SIBA (Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance) gathering held in Mobile, AL from Sept. 25-28. The two arrived early for Thursday's all-day Bookseller School.

"Sometimes when people hear 'bookseller school' they think it's going to be all beginner information," said Ledford, who has stayed on at the store as its media contact. "I'd been working at Fireside since I was 16 and I owned it for the last three years and I still learned new things from that day of education."

Welcome to STARS

Dear SIBA Booksellers,

announceHave you ever had a phone call like this?  "Hi, I'm an author and I'm going to be visiting your town next week, can I do a signing at your store?"  When I was manager at Bristol Books, I used to get those kinds of calls all the time and it was incredibly frustrating-there was never enough time to adequately promote a signing like this, especially with an author who was unknown to the area. And yet, we wanted to have a busy events schedule and we were often asked to find authors for book club meetings and what not. I felt like I missed some great opportunities.

It was those kinds of calls and their attendant frustrations that gave SIBA the idea for a new service:
SIBA is pleased to give its members a sneak-peak into its newest service for its members, the Southern Traveling Authors Registration Service (STARS).  STARS is a part of the Authors 'Round the South website, and operates as a "speakers bureau" geared specifically towards Southern independent bookstores.
