Educational Programs at SIBA
One of SIBA’s primary goals is to help its members becomes better, more profitable businesses. To that end, SIBA sponsors a number of educational sessions for its members throughout the year, making an effort to bring at least one such opportunity to each part of its territory every year. Topics vary based on requests from members and availability of speakers. Most of SIBA’s educational programming is hosted free of charge for its core bookstore members.

    Your membership gives you entrance each fall to a trade show floor alive with books - over 300 tables manned by sales representatives who work in your part of the country and who are familiar with both the rewards and the difficulties of selling books in the Southeast. You will be associating with nearly six hundred booksellers who enjoy the intimacy of a regional association where it is easy to discuss what works for them in bookselling and eager to learn what works for you.

    The trade show schedule is packed with workshops and panels. You will meet many authors signing their books, speaking, or giving readings from their newly published books.The trade show is southern in its friendliness, social gatherings, and intimacy encouraging many informal exchanges of ideas.

    The Spring Book Show is a Remainder book show held annually in March in Atlanta--the most crentrally located large city in SIBA territory. SIBA works with the Spring Book Show organizers to provide bookseller education at the show for attendees. SIBA stores gain valuable information about the remainder industry, as well as a chance to attend seminars and panels they may not have the opportunity to see at other times of the year.

    The Revivals are SIBA's way of taking the education offered at the SIBA Tradeshow and Spring Book Show on the road. Four to six times each year, usually in the spring, SIBA hosts a get-together at participating member bookstores throughout the South. These "Revivals" last about four hours, and are usually devoted to a theme or topic. Some of the topics covered in the past have been:

    • How to Get Authors for Events
    • Effective Publicity
    • Inventory Management
    • Creating a "Buy Local" movement
    • Websites, Blogs, and Email Marketing
    Any member bookstore can host a revival. Bookstores often use the revival not only to share information and their own expertise, but to get feedback on their own store layout and programs. Lunch is provided by SIBA and SIBA also often can arrange to have an author come for the meal to talk about books. Time is also made for booksellers to exchange information and ideas among themselves.
