Okra Picks Extended. . .now quarterly!
In order to maximize sales and exposure of Okra Picks titles, SIBA has introduced the Okra Picks Extended Program (OPX). Books that are part of the program have high quality, full color cards printed promoting the title and distributed to SIBA member bookstores, where they are displayed in a rack on the store counter and/or in floor displays. Each card is specially designed and contains a unique QR code that will allow readers to download a copy of the first chapter of the book.
The Okra Picks Extended program is only available for books that have been selected as Okra Picks. Cost is $1499 to participate.
The Okra Picks are a dozen fresh titles chosen each season that SIBA Indie Bookstores want to handsell. These books should be southern in nature but can cover any genre. Southerners love their writers, and we want to be at the forefront of bringing a strong selection of southern titles not to be missed each season. A regional variation of the Indie Next list, Okra Picks are a coordinated region-wide marketing program designed to allow stores to promote the new southern books they are especially excited about and thus demonstrate the power of indie booksellers to break out new titles and sell more books. SIBA actively promotes these titles to both consumers and booksellers at www.authorsroundthesouth.com, sibaweb.com and across our social media newtworks. Lady Banks introduces The Okra Picks to over 10,000 consumer subscribers.
Designed to get your new releases into customer's shopping bags, the Okra Picks program combines online and mobile promotion with prime in-store placement.
Here is what you get for $1499:
- 5,000 + full color Okra Pick cards, business card-sized, featuring your Okra Pick and directing consumers to read the first chapter placed in provided display piece in participating bookstores across the south.
- Buzz Honors on your title’s Edelweiss listing
- Prime placement on the First Chapter Okra Picks page with links to appropriate collateral materials.
- Book jacket will be featured in the weekly Lady Banks Commonplace Book consumer enewsletter with link to indie shopping cart.
- Okra Pick titles that appear on the Southern Indie Bestseller List are highlighted and promoted via social networking avenues like twitter and facebook. Follow #okrapick

Who nominates books for the Okra Picks?
Only SIBA member bookstores can nominate books, nominations that come from nonmember stores or publishers are discarded. However, SIBA does encourage publishers to solicit nominations from bookstores on behalf of their titles.
How do I get a store to nominate my book as an Okra pick?
Ask them! We suggest using an eBlast or listing in our Galleys & Giveaways email to get review copies in the hands of bookstores well in advance of publication, and following up with stores when the deadline comes around. Stores usually need several months to read review copies, and Okra nominations close thirty days before they are announced for that season.

How do I know my book has been chosen as an Okra Pick?
Okra Picks are selected the month before their season. SIBA informs the publishers of each book prior to the official announcement, and at that point publishers can decide if they wish to participate in OPX. Any book selected as an Okra Pick can take part in the OPX program.
My book is self-published. Can I be an Okra Pick?
Yes. But your book must have regular distribution and be listed at Indiebound.org.
My book has already been released. Can I be an Okra Pick?
No. Only titles published in the designated season are eligible.
My book is not Southern, but I am. Can I be an Okra Pick?
Yes. Okra Pick titles must be southern in nature, or by a southern author, preferably both.
