One Book One SIBA becomes One Book One South with Lalita Tademy’s Citizens Creek
(Columbia, SC)---The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) has selected Citizens Creek by Lalita Tademy (Atria Books) to be its “One Book, One SIBA” read at the SIBA Fall Discovery Show being held in Norfolk, Virgina, September 19 – 21. As the chosen title for the “show-wide book club,” every attendee at the Discovery Show will receive a copy of the book, and Lalita Tademy will be one of the featured speakers in the program.
SIBA launched “One Book One SIBA” at its show in New Orleans in 2013 with the selection of Sheri Fink’s Five Days at Memorial. The book’s subsequent success, including a steady appearance on the Southern Independent Bestseller List and culminating in being named the winner of 2014 SIBA Book Award for Nonfiction, convinced SIBA Executive Director Wanda Jewell that “One Book One SIBA” could be a powerful way to break out a book and demonstrate the influence of southern independent booksellers when they come together to support a title. So for 2014 SIBA is expanding “One Book One SIBA” into “One Book One South.” The expanded program will reach out not only to booksellers, but to consumer and fans of southern literature, and will include author interviews, online live spree casts, and social networking coverage.
Jewell stated that SIBA went through careful deliberation before selecting Citizens Creek to be the focus of the South-wide book club. “We wanted to pick a book that had a broad appeal and could attract many kinds of readers, that had a strong Southern focus, that was very well written, and that could generate a good discussion,” said Jewell, who admitted that when she received a review copy of the book, she read it straight through in a single day. “I had a ton of work to do and I had to just blow it all off so I could finish the book,” she admitted, “I didn’t even answer my email!” She felt Citizens Creek was a book and author that every SIBA bookstore could enthusiastically support. She also praised Atria Books for their commitment to partnering with independent bookstores to raise awareness of the book across the South, including an hour-long public Q&A with the author on Facebook on November 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
Citizens Creek, which will be published by Atria Books on November 4, 2014, is the story of a once-enslaved man who is able to buy his freedom after serving as a translator during the American Indian Wars. His story, and the story of his granddaughter who inherits his legacy, sheds light on an often-overlooked period of American history, and explores issues of identity, community, and family in a powerful, moving way.
Lalita Tademy is a familiar name to people who love Southern literature. Her first novel, Cane River, was chosen as the 2001 Oprah Summer Book Club selection and the sequel, Red River, received widespread critical acclaim.
