Marketing Ideas for the SIBA Book Awards

  • Displays sell books! Display all the finalists together or separate the categories into smaller displays in the areas where those books are sold.
Check with the online toolkit list to find all the finalists and nominees from your state and do a special display of those titles.
  • Display the ten year list to the right as “the ultimate reading list” for book clubs. Include past SIBA winners, and reading group information if available (check the SIBA website)
  • Host a staff meeting where the finalists can be discussed. Remember that to get a book to sell in your store, your staff has to want to sell it!
  • Create a website display from the finalists and invite customers to pick their favorites.
  • A Penny for Your Thoughts display: Have a jar for each book and invite customers to put pennies into the jars of the books they think are the best.
  • Use the enclosed Free Book Stimulus Plan flyer to encourage customers to buy from your Book Award display and get a free book from SIBA.
  • Use pots and pans to display the cookbook finalists.
  • Create sample menus with recipes from the cookbook finalists to display with the books.
  • Host a southern biscuit cook-off. Each of the cookbook finalists contain interesting biscuit recipes Host a cook off and invite your customers to bring in their own recipes. Get a local restaurant chef to act as a judge.
  • Use plastic kid toys – beach toys are very cheap (and can be used for Beach Reads as well) – to display the children book finalists.
  • Display the poetry finalists with the Magnetic Poetry Kits and blank books.
  • Add a couple lines from the poems in the poetry finalists to your email signature or your register receipt printouts.
  • Display the non-fiction finalists with the local newspapers, daily and weekly.
  • Display the fiction finalists with all things southern. Think bags of grits, Moon Pies, plastic magnolias, Luzianne Tea, the southern sky is the limit…

If Animals Kissed Good Night

If Animals Kissed Good Night

Farrar Straus Giroux | 9780374380519 | $16.95

Ann Paul, illustrated by David Walker

"If animals kissed
""like we kiss good night,
""Giraffe and his calf
""would stretch their necks high
""and kiss just beneath
""the top of the sky."

In a cozy bedtime chat with her mom, a young girl wonders how animal families might say good night. Would Wolf and his pup "kiss and then HOWL"? Would Bear and her cub "kiss and then GROWL"? But what about Sloth and her baby? They move soooo slooowwwww . . . they're sure to be kissing from early evening until long after everyone else is fast asleep!

With its whimsical art and playful rhymed verse, this affectionate picture book is bound to become a bedtime favorite.

Kirby is also a talented artist, self-illustrating the book in soft, beautiful watercolors. A must for any collection of children's books.

This collection of dark and enchanted satire, musings, and witticisms exposes a swatch in the psyche deeper than character studies or scenarios of right or wrong, good or bad, politics or peccadilloes. Crafty, uncensored, and contentious, this irreverent commentary serves up the perfect "quipsodic" tonic for overcoming the perpetually positive, goodie-two-shoes, saintly Stepford, happy middlebrow mindset. From the hallowed halls of tycoons to the underbelly of pop culture and flawed people living in the abyss, beyond the revelry and merrymaking, the guises and disguises, herein lies a quirky shadow dance of quips; a dark-jewel slice of life. Taking umbrage at milquetoast platitudes, with sardonic, world-weary wit, the narrative delivers insolent interpretations of how Louisiana's rebellious, rollicking French Quarter saints and sinners approach life, love, lust, backstabbing, and survival on the brink.

About the SIBA Book Award:

Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on their favorite hand-sell books of the year. These are the Southern books they have most enjoyed selling to customers; the ones that they couldn't stop talking about; the ones most often pushed into a customer’s hands with the words “You have got to read this!” The SIBA Book Award was created to recognize great books of Southern origin, as determined by people whose business it is to know great books—the independent booksellers of the South.

Books are nominated in six categories, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cooking young adult and children's. For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, and it must have been originally published within the 2008 calendar year. Only SIBA-member booksellers can submit nominations and vote on the selection of finalists. Winners will be chosen from the list of finalists by a jury of SIBA booksellers.

Nomination period: November 1 - February 15
